Lena Christou - About Me

Introduction:

Hello, I’m Lena. It’s lovely to have you here.

I’m a registered Nutritional Therapist and Beauty Therapist based in south west London, with a special interest in skin conditions.

Drawing upon years of professional practice experience, I educate my clients to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their health. Together, we explore any trigger factors, including emotions, stress and anxiety, and examine how it impacts health. Through a personalised and nurturing approach, I support my clients on their wellbeing journey and empower them to manage their own health.

Early Beginnings:

I was born and raised in Eastbourne, a picturesque seaside town in East Sussex, England. My parents were first-generation immigrants and owned a bustling restaurant for 30 years. They instilled in me a strong work ethic and taught me that running your own business was the epitome of a successful working life! This valuable lesson, along with the loving and nurturing upbringing they provided, helped to shape my values.

It ignited a spark in me to start my own business and forge my own path, and I’ve been self-employed for the majority of my working life. I’m proud to have achieved a balance between my cherished family life and my business, and I invest heaps of energy and love into both.

My Business Journey:

My family influenced my journey into the beauty, nutritional therapy and wellbeing industry, but not in the way you might think. My father and grandfather were both chefs and my mother’s side of the family are all great cooks. Food plays an essential role in our family; I have vivid memories of my mum preparing lamb and potato ‘sandwiches’ for my school lunch, refusing to believe that sandwiches were real food! Thanks to her, I learnt the importance of wholesome, nourishing food.

Around 2018, I was going through a painful bereavement and, as frequently is the case, neglecting my own wellbeing. I was skipping regular meals, comfort eating and not looking after myself and this is a pattern I see in so many of my own clients. I reached a point where I knew I couldn’t go on like this, and something needed to change.

Shortly after, I had the opportunity to attend a lecture at a beauty event that captivated me. This was at a time when the beauty, wellbeing and nutrition industries were beginning to intersect. The speaker was from The College of Naturopathic Medicine [CNM], and they emphasised the importance of good nutrition. They offered a free iridology session which was fascinating. It resonated with another lecture I had attended, by skincare expert Danné Montague-King, who focused on the pivotal role diet plays in treating skin conditions such as acne and rosacea.

It was a transformative moment for me. For the first time, I realised you had to treat skin concerns from the inside out, rather than focusing solely on the outside in.

These experiences inspired me to study a 3 year naturopathic nutritional therapy diploma at CNM in 2018, with the specific aim of helping my clients achieve greater results. I consider this a major turning point; in both my career and for my clients' outcomes.

In 2000, the Orangerie Beauty Clinic was created and when I graduated from CNM in October 2021, I expanded my business and set up Orangerie Nutrition and Wellbeing Clinic. I’ve never looked back. I apply the knowledge I acquired through my studies to guide and support my clients, providing them with advice that highlights the importance of good nutrition in managing everything from muscle tension, alleviating joint inflammation and improving sleep quality. Nutrition is now a key element of my professional practice, and I take immense satisfaction in having studied it.

My Services:

The Orangerie Nutrition and Wellbeing Clinic is located in my home in Streatham, south west London and offers a relaxing and elegant treatment room for a tranquil escape.

Skincare support services include advanced botanical peels and skin revision enzyme therapy with DMK Products (The Orangerie Nutrition is a Program One DMK Certified Clinic). Addressing the root cause of symptoms and imbalances is key in my practice, and I provide nutritional therapy advice together with wellbeing services and general wellbeing stress support.

I am proud to also offer the following:

  • An exciting collection of modalities to support client outcomes, which includes personally made Homeobotanical remedies. This features adaptogenic herbs to manage stress, poor sleep and gut health and anti-inflammatory herbs to soothe muscle and joint pains.

  • I offer wellbeing massage such as aromatheapy and lymphatic drainage for stress relief and relaxation.

  • I specialise in Bach Flower and Australian Bush Flower Remedies for support in coping with every day anxieties and stresses.

  • I practise Metphysical Kinesiology, a specialist form of muscle testing to rebalance the body and mind.

  • I'm fully trained in private functional testing which allows me to support my clients with more complex cases. This testing is especially beneficial for supporting skin conditions like acne; it enables in-depth hormone testing to support a greater balance which, from my perspective, is vital to identify the root cause of a skin problem. Testing includes Gut Microbiome Testing, DUTCH Testing and Nutrigenomics with Lifecode GX - a study of genetics and their impact on personalising individual nutritional needs based on specific gene characteristics.

Client Experience:

I have worked tirelessly over the last 30 years to build a loyal client base and many of my clients have been with me since the beginning, or joined me via word-of-mouth recommendation. This is something I never take for granted as I place great value on my reputation, dependability and commitment to professional standards. My clients are based far and wide, and not just in our leafy corner of south west London! I also offer online consultations for nutritional therapy to clients in the UK, and as far away as Cyprus, Australia, and Canada.

My enthusiasm for health and wellbeing is unwavering, and I've experienced first-hand how it can lead to positive transformation and change. This passion radiates through my work - it drives my wish to connect with my clients from the first consultation and ensure their experience is memorable.

I provide a personalised, whole-person approach to my clients' health. It is encouraging that a growing number of doctors and health practitioners are recognising the importance of nutrition as a preventative measure to maintaining optimal health and I'm happy to engage with a client's GP to introduce my business and services, and detail the professional bodies I'm affiliated with and codes of practice I adhere to

I also share a wide source of useful resources on my online health portal, HealthPath, to enable my clients to understand their symptoms better. This includes supplement recommendations, delectable recipes with convenient shopping lists, testing recommendations and podcasts and articles.

My Unique Approach:

It's important to clarify that the scope of my practice is not to provide a diagnosis or manage specific conditions such as kidney disease or cardiovascular disease, or to heal, treat or prevent any such conditions.

My role is to support clients with existing diagnoses by offering personalised nutrition and wellbeing recommendations. I take immense pride in equipping my clients with the essential tools and resources to take control of their own health. In most cases, visiting a GP can lead to medication prescriptions or reassurances of being 'fine’. I like to delve a bit  deeper and get to the root issue of issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Endometriosis. I've also developed educational handouts to explain the underlying mechanisms behind these conditions, identify any imbalances and demonstrate how nutrition can play a supportive role.

The proliferation of fads in the wellbeing industry, stoked by social media, has helped to bring exposure to some important issues but I firmly believe there is no “one size fits all” approach to health. Instead, I advocate for a personalised and holistic approach to wellness that considers the whole person.

I consider myself “diet-agnostic”; meaning I focus on whole-food healthy eating and maintain a healthy viewpoint towards a belief system centered on specific diets. Whether my clients choose to follow a pescetarian, vegan or mediterranean diet, I focus on supporting them according to their ethical preferences, and assess their nutritional needs in line with this.

Sources of Inspiration:

There are many practitioners I admire in the industry, including Danné Montague-King, Patrick McKeown, Professor Tim Spector, Gabor Mate, Dr Rangan Chattergee, and Dr David Unwin, a GP who supports his diabetic patients to gradually reduce their medication and reverse their diabetes with diet improvements and a regular support group at his practice.

A little about me…

I hope this has given you an insight into me and The Orangerie Nutrition and Wellbeing Clinic, a business I am very proud of!

There are numerous aspects of my work that I cherish, and supporting people to be their happiest, healthiest and most confident keeps me naturally motivated and inspired. I love how the benefits of yoga, meditation, and breathing practices can support wellbeing, having found these valuable in my own personal health journey and now advocate these for others.

In my downtime, I read voraciously and love to visit my parents by the calm, azure sea in Cyprus. If physical travel isn’t possible, I dream of being there instead while indulging in a warm lavender-scented bath of magnesium salts!!

Please do get in touch, I would love to hear from you.
